Game Preview

Legendary college football coach Paul Bryant once said: “offense wins games…defense wins championships.” Well, it’s time to find out if that applies to the NBA. The Boston Celtics, led by Jason Tatum and Marcus Smart (Defensive Player of the Year), collide with the Golden State Warriors, led by Stephen Curry (25.9 points per game), in what’s expected to be an epic final.

The Warriors own home-court advantage, meaning Game 1 will be at Chase Center, where they’re 9-0 in the postseason. That’s more than enough for them to come in as the NBA betting favorites by 3½ points. Regarding the spread, they’re 5-1 ATS in their last six games.

Not so fast, though. The Celtics have been the best team in the postseason when playing on the road thanks to a 7-2 record. Plus, they’re 12-1 ATS in their last 13 games away from home. Most recently, after losing Game 6 at home, they went to Miami and won Game 7 by four points.

During the regular season, the teams split games. Curiously enough, the Warriors won in Boston (111-107), while the Celtics won in San Francisco (110-88). Regarding the postseason, Golden State’s players have a total of 123 games of Finals experience, while Boston’s players have zero.

Smart doesn’t care about that: “I’ve gone from a naive Southern kid to a championship-starved Bostonian. I won’t settle for anything less than Banner 18,” he said.

His confidence comes from the Celtics’ defense ranking in field-goal percentage (43.3) and 3-point percentage (31.7). They ranked second in both categories. The thing is that the Warriors’ offense ranked third in field-goal percentage with 49.3 and fourth in 3-point percentage with 37.9.

Summing up, as Heath Ledger’s Joker told Christian Bale’s Batman: “this is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.”

Game 2, also at Chase Center, is scheduled for Sunday night.
