Brooklyn Nets vs Boston Celtics: Predictions & Analysis 4/20/2022

Game Preview

In an alternate reality, Kevin Durant didn’t forget to guard Jason Tatum and the Brooklyn Nets won Game 1. Unfortunately for the former MVP, we aren’t in an alternate reality. In our reality, the Boston Celtics lead the NBA Playoffs first-round series thanks to a 115-114 victory.

Game 2, also at the TD Garden, where Boston owns a 29-13 record, won’t include All-Star Ben Simmons. Head coach Steve Nash confirmed Simmons was cleared for contact. However, he’s not ready to compete at such a high level.

“He’s making progress but there’s no real update. We’ll see how he responds and see if he’s able to do more contact as the days go by,” said Nash.

Besides Simmons, Joe Harris remains out due to an ankle injury. LaMarcus Aldridge and Blake Griffin could see some action after not playing in Game 1 (coach’s decision).

The good news for Brooklyn is that Kyrie Irving (39 points in Game 1) will be able to play. The league fined Irving $50,000 “for making obscene gestures on the playing court and directing profane language toward the spectator stands.” Some think he should have been suspended for at least one game.

As for the Celtics, Marcus Smart will be highly motivated after being named Defensive Player of the Year. He became only the second point-guard to win the award after Gary Payton did it back in 1996. Smart finished Game 1 with 20 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

He was one of four Celtics’ players to finish Game 1 with 20+ points. That includes Jaylen Brown, who summed up what we can expect tonight as follows: “It’s war out there. It’s survival of the fittest. You get hit, you get back up. This is what I signed up for.”

The only name on Boston’s injury list is Robert Williams.
