Giannis Antetokounmpo was just too much for the Boston Celtics to handle in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Greek Freak led the Milwaukee Bucks to a 101-89 victory at the TD Garden with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. That was his second career playoff triple-double.
Jrue Holiday added 25 points, while Bobby Portis finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The two of them, alongside Grayson Allen (11 points), have become Antetokounmpo’s best allies since Khris Middleton got hurt. Middleton has been out since the first-round series against the Chicago Bulls.
As for the Celtics, Jayson Tatum led the way with 21 points. He was followed by Jaylen Brown with 12 points. The thing is that Tatum shot for 33.3 percent and Brown shot for 30.8 percent. That can’t happen again, at least not if they want to even the series.
To be fair, Marcus Smart, recently crowned Defensive Player of the Year, sustained an injury to his right arm, in addition to a right quad contusion. He returned for the second half, but not being at 100 percent didn’t allow him to be the physical player he usually is.
“I think the quad bothered him more than the shoulder. But you know he’s gonna play through a lot and it could affect him. He’s getting iced down now, so he’ll be OK,” head coach Ime Udoka said.
That’s very good news for Boston because Smart is also the team’s motivator.
Having him on board is one of the reasons for the Celtics to control the NBA odds for Game 2. That’s right, Boston comes in as the favorite by 4½ points (-110). The Celtics are 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games.
Regarding the Moneyline, Boston is offering a -190 price, while Milwaukee is +165. The Bucks are 12-6 straight up in their last 18 games against the Celtics.
Last but not least, Boston’s injury report is empty. On the other hand, Milwaukee’s includes Middleton and George Hill.
