When the Philadelphia 76ers’ 2022 playoff run came to an end with a Game 6 loss to the Miami Heat in the playoffs, they figured out they weren’t good enough. Lack of depth, physical and mental toughness were part of what played a role in Philly’s inability to get beyond the second round. Therefore, important changes were to be expected in the offseason.
Although rumored to be looking for star players in the offseason, the Sixers’ front office did exactly the opposite. Instead of replacing their key players, the 76ers complemented their current star core of Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris. During the 2022 NBA Draft, the Sixers gave up their lone pick to acquire guard De’Anthony Melton from the Grizzlies. And then, when free agency opened, Philly signed P.J. Tucker, Daniel House and Trevelin Queen, all before resigning star James Harden. The 76ers could still be looking at the trade and free agency market, but they’ve been praised by the critics for the moves they’ve made so far.
Up in Boston, the Celtics have been rated by some journalists among the top three off seasons in the NBA for the 22/23 season. Boston got to work pretty early in the offseason, trading veteran Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith and three deep rotation players, for former Pacers’ point guard Malcolm Brogdon, all while using their mini-mid level exception to sign swingman Danilo Gallinari. They also re-signed Sam Hauser to a three-season deal and inked 2022 draft pick JD Davison and Mfiondu Kabengele to two-way deals.
