Game Preview

Prior to the start of the NBA Playoffs first-round series between the New Orleans Pelicans (8) and the Phoenix Suns (1), nobody gave the No. 8 seed a chance. Two games later, Brandon Ingram & Co. have become a real threat, especially with Devin Booker out due to a hamstring injury.

Booker left Game 2, which New Orleans ended up winning 125-114, and is expected to miss the rest of the series. With Booker out, Cameron Johnson (11 points) and Cameron Payne (six points) saw more action, expect that to continue. Also, Aaron Holiday could get some minutes. So far, he hasn’t played.

Mikal Bridges (19 points) and Chris Paul (17 points, 14 assists) tried their best to keep the team motivated, but it wasn’t enough.

“We normally don’t get outplayed from an intensity standpoint. You have to give them credit,” head coach Monty Williams said.

As for the Pelicans, Brandon Ingram (37 points) and CJ McCollum (23 points) led the way to victory. McCollum almost achieved a triple-double but finished with nine assists and eight rebounds.

“I watch guys like B.I. and CJ and sometimes it’s like they’re playing a different sport. They’re that impressive. To them, that’s normal,” Larry Nance Jr. said about his teammates. That reflects the confidence this group has on its leaders.

Game 3 will be at Smoothie King Center, where the Pelicans own a 20-22 record. Not the best, but check this out, New Orleans is 6-1 straight up in its last seven games played on Friday. I think I can hear somebody in New Orleans screaming TGIF!

It won’t be easy, though. Phoenix owns a 32-9 record on the road and dominates the NBA betting odds. That’s right, even with Booker out, the Suns are favorites by two points (-110). The Suns are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against the Pelicans. In this case, the day is irrelevant.
