The Delaware State Hornets and the Columbia Lions meet Wednesday in college basketball action at Levien Gym. Delaware State is 1-2 so far this year and coming off a loss to Villanova. As for Columbia, they’re 0-3 following a loss to Sacred Heart back on Sunday.
Delaware State played Virginia Tech in their first matchup of the year. The Hornets were overwhelmed in that one and lost 95-57. The good news is that Delaware State was able to bounce back with a 104-67 win over Immaculata in game two.
The Hornets faced another tricky matchup versus Villanova in game three. Delaware State had a 27-24 lead by halftime but gave it away in the second half during a 60-50 defeat. Khyrie Staten was the only team player in double-figures with 10 points.
Over on the Columbia side, they were drilled by Rutgers in their opener this year, scoring just 14 points in the second half during a 75-35 loss. The Lions didn’t fare much better in game two against UMass Lowell and took an 89-62 defeat.
Columbia matched up with Sacred Heart Sunday in game three and had their closest outcome yet. Unfortunately the result was still the same, as the Lions fell 88-85. Tops in scoring was Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa with 28 points and six boards.
The Columbia Lions started the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season on a three-game losing streak. They are in desperate need of a win as a fourth loss could really push them behind in the standings, making it even more difficult for a comeback.
The Hornets are coming off a pretty limp game against Villanova, but they didn’t shoot all that badly; it was simply a slow-paced matchup. Delaware State shot 44.4 percent from the field in that one and out-rebounded the Wildcats 28-27. On the other hand, Columbia is coming off a pretty good shooting performance versus Sacred Heart.
