The Manhattan Jaspers and the VCU Rams will meet today in exciting college basketball action at the Siegel Center. Manhattan managed to go 15-15 overall last season, finshing in the bottom half of the MAAC. As for VCU, they finished a successful season with a 22-10 overall run last year. The Rams would ultimately advance to the Second Round of the NIT.
The good news about Manhattan’s 15-15 underwhelming record last year is that they improved from their previous disastrous run of 7-13. The Jaspers went 8-12 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games, leaving them ahead of only Rider, Canisius and Quinnipiac.
Manhattan started out quite well with an 8-3 overall run, but the team would win consecutive games just once for the rest of the season. After hitting a 1-3 run to close out the regular season, the Jaspers lost to Rider in the first round of the conference competition.
Over on the Rams’ side of the court, they also improved on their 19-7 run from 2021 at 22-10 last season. VCU improved quite a lot and went 14-4 in the Atlantic 10 matchups, leaving the team in 3rd place behind juggernauts Davidson and Dayton.
VCU was positioned at a shaky 10-6 record back in January, however they rallied for the rest of the season and would only lose 2 more games after that. If this same team spirit continues into this new season, we can expect VCU to make a deep run.
The Rams should be equipped well enough to battle for a conference title this season if all goes well for them. VCU is coming off a nice defensive improvement from last year (ranked seventh nationally in adjusted efficiency statistics), and they’ll get Ace Baldwin rather soon. This time around both statistics and records show VCU to have the advantage.
