This Tuesday, December 20, we will enjoy college basketball with a showdown between the Providence Friars and the Marquette Golden Eagles. Both teams are coming off a win, Marquette beat Creighton 69-58 and the Providence Friars beat Seton Hall 71-67.
Providence has had a good week, coming in with a streak of four straight wins and of course they will try to make it five. Will this motivation and momentum be enough to overcome the Golden Eagles? Providence averages 75 points per game, the offense is led by Bryce Hopkins with 16 points per game, 8 rebounds and two assists. Followed by Ed Crosswell with another 12 and Devin Carter with another 11. The defense isn’t doing too bad either, allowing just 68 points per game. Providence will need both sides of the court to keep up this pace to beat the Golden Eagles.
On the other hand, the Golden Eagles come to try to get their fourth consecutive victory. They come in with a 9-3 record and average 81 points per game. Marquette’s offense is led by Kam Jones and his 16 points per game. Oliver Maxence contributes another 15 points and Oso Ighodaro another 11. In fact Oso Ighodaro led the offense last game with 16 points and six rebounds. This trio is quite strong. The defense is also performing well on the court allowing only 67 points per game. In the past they gave up 58 which shows some consistency. They need to keep it up.
Providence is on a hot streak and they play excellent at home where their scoring average increases. They are good at protecting the ball and guarding the rebounding so they are not likely to give Marquette much of a chance to score. On the other hand the Golden Eagles also come motivated and with a good momentum. However they have not performed well on the road where their scoring average is down.
