Game Preview

A 2nd round tilt in the 2023 NCAA Tournament will showcase the #8 seed Maryland Terrapins versus the #1 seed Alabama Crimson Tide this Saturday evening. In their 1st round matchup, Maryland was narrowly able to beat West Virginia 67-65. As for Alabama, they demolished Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 96-75 to seal their victory on Thursday night.

Tipoff is set to start at 9:40 pm Eastern Time at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

Looking at Alabama, freshman forward Brandon Miller is sadly suffering from a groin injury, but the Tide are hopeful he will be able to set foot in the court for this matchup. Miller is the most offensively versatile tool for Alabama, especially from 3 point range thanks to his quick yet smooth jumper from any range. The projected NBA lottery pick currently leads the team in points (19.1) and rebounds (8.2).

Beside Miller, junior guard Mark Sears has found a spot in the starting squad as a role player, thanks to his ability to gather points in any area of the court. Sears is physically strong and has a reliable jumper to space the floor versus conservative defenses. The Alabama native currently records 12.6 points, 2.6 assists while shooting 36% from deep per match.

As for Maryland, senior guard Jahmir Young has been the key offensively for the team. Young specializes in perimeter shooting, however his main asset is his off ball movement to find space for open shots. The Maryland native averages 15.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per bout.

Lastly, Maryland’s sophomore forward Julian Reese is an athletic and agile playmaker in the frontcourt, something valuable and yet rare for most teams in the tournament. Reese has high jumping and can finish above the rim with no issues. With Young, Reese was able to find a rather easy release ball to the perimeter if his post play was not able to finish with a bucket, making the duo rather dangerous.

This time around Maryland’s dynamic duo might be able to pull an upset if they manage to not get suppressed, however it is rather unlikely with Miller most likely outscoring the 2 offensively.
