Michigan vs Pittsburgh: Preview & Picks 11/16/2022

Game Preview

Game Preview

The Michigan Wolverines travel to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. to face the Pittsburgh Panthers on Wednesday in the Legends Classic. Michigan found a way to beat a scrappy Eastern Michigan team in their last game 88-83, while the Panthers picked up a 1-56 loss at home to West Virginia on Friday in the Backyard Brawl rivalry.

Against Eastern Michigan, the Wolverines were the favorites, but they found themselves down by three at the half and were trailing for most of the game. If not for 7-1 junior center Hunter Dickinson, this would have been an upset for the Eagles, who received 30 points from Emoni Bates. Bates was the No. 3 recruit in the 2021 class, who put up pedestrian numbers at Memphis, but should be a superstar in the MAC.

Dickinson led the Wolverines with 31 points on 13-of-17 shooting and seven boards. He’s one of the best big men in the nation, who averaged 18.6 points for a disappointing 19-15 team in 2021-22. The Wolverines shot just 33.9% from three-point range last season to rank 9th in the Big 10 and they made just 5-of-21 from beyond the arc against Eastern Michigan.

On the other hand, Pittsburgh won its opener on Nov. 7, defeating Tennessee-Martin 80-58. That seemed to be what Jeff Capel’s team needed, coming off a rough 11-21 season. Blake Hinson, an Ole Miss transfer, led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds. However, he was held to just five points on 1-of-6 from three-point range in their loss against West Virginia.

For Pittsburgh to get back to being a competitive team in the ACC again, they have to improve offensively, where they were dreadful last season. They also ranked 327th in the nation in turnover margin at -3.0. That performance against “Press Virginia” didn’t help. The hope is that guards Nelly Cummings, Greg Elliott, and Nike Sibande will eventually help the offense run smoother.
