Game Preview

Both Garden State’s teams open up their respective 2022-23 campaigns on the college court as a member of the CAA takes on one team from the Big East. The Monmouth Hawks are on the road as they travel to face the Seton Hall Pirates Wednesday night. Monmouth ended the 2021-22 season 21-13 overall and 11-9 in the MAAC. Seton Hall finished the 2021-22 campaign 21-11 overall and 11-8 in the Big East.

Monmouth aka The Hawks will face a different level of competition in the CAA and are looking to continue their fourth straight winning season under coach King Rice’s guidance. It could be a tough year of change for the Hawks and not just because they have switched conferences as a whole. Monmouth lost their top 4 scoring players from last season, this core achieved an average of 52.1 points and 18.9 rebounds per contest.

Monmouth collected 36.5 boards a game while placing 282nd in assists with 11.7 per night. Myles Foster is the team’s leading returning scorer this season but he averaged just 5.3 points per game last season. Monmouth shot just 41.8% from the field as a team, which was only 293rd in the country.

The Seton Hall Pirates have a new coach at the helm as Kevin Willard took the job at Maryland after his previous campaign. By his side is one of his former assistants, Shaheen Holloway, who played at the school from 1996-97 through 1999-00.

Last season, Seton Hall took an average of 71.9 points per game on the offensive end of the court, while grabbing an average of 38.5 boards per game and an average of 10.3 assists. Alexis Yetna, Jamir Harris, Tyrese Samuel and Tray Jackson will look to continue their flexibility as they have to contribute on both ends for the team to have success.

Monmouth has been a solid mid program in recent years but this is going to be a transition period for them. Seton Hall lost Bryce Aiken, Myles Cale and Jared Rhoden but bringing in new players like Odukale and Ndefo helps adjust their rotation. Thus you have to give the Pirates the advantage in this contest.
