Game Preview

It’s a non-conference matchup to open the college hoops season as a member of the Big Sky travels east to face a program from the Atlantic 10 in the Steel City. The Montana Grizzlies are on the road as they travel to face the Duquesne Dukes Tuesday night.

Montana finished last season with a record of at least .500 for the 14th straight year but finishing fifth in the Big Sky while missing postseason play was a disappointment. The Grizzlies do have some work to do under coach Travis DeCuire as there has been a fair amount of turnover from last season.

Five of their top eight scorers from a season ago are no longer part of the program, taking a lot of production from the mix. Last season, the Grizzlies averaged 72.2 points per game on the season so far, putting them 145th in the nation in scoring offense.

Duquesne struggled last season, winning only six games overall, and only one in conference play to continue a steep decline. It was only the 2019-20 season that saw the Dukes finish 21-9 on the season. Keith Dambrot’s squad is looking for improvement this season, but he has a roster that is in flux.

Five of the top seven players from last season’s team are gone, leaving plenty of holes in what was a mediocre rotation last season. That includes the Dukes’ top scorer from a season ago, as Primo Spears left after his freshman season to play for Georgetown.

Both teams are looking to improve this season after disappointing campaigns in the 2021-22 season. The Grizzlies have had plenty of success under DeCuire but trying to slot guys in behind Bannan and Whitney on the depth chart could be a challenge. The Dukes are at home here and with their new pieces, they might have a slight edge in this match.
