The currently undefeated New Mexico Lobos will continue their non-conference schedule Wednesday, with a highly-anticipated face-off against the Saint Mary’s Gaels at University Credit Union Pavilion. New Mexico is meeting Saint Mary’s for the first time since 2018 when the Gaels rolled over the Lobos 85-60. To nobody’s surprise, Saint Mary’s is heading into this game as the heavy favorites.
The New Mexico Lobos were the hosts for the Lobo Classic over the weekend and obliterated their rivals in front of the home fans. Right after a 79-61 win over Jacksonville State on Friday, the Lobos went up against North Dakota State and managed to secure a 76-55 victory on Saturday and Northern Colorado 98-74 on Sunday.
Senior center Morris Udeze, who is coming all the way from Wichita State, led the way for the Lobos, scoring 22 points against Jacksonville State, following a monster-like performance by scoring 33 points and a 14-rebound double-double versus Northern Colorado. Overall, New Mexico made 53.7% of its field shots and 43.8% of its triples against the Bears on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Saint Mary’s Gaels couldn’t keep their six-game winning streak going, losing on Thursday. They suffered a heart-breaking 68-64 overtime loss to the Washington Huskies in the Paycom Wooden Legacy in Anaheim. The Gaels were listed as the heavy favorites but had an awful shooting, making only 37.5% of their field shots and just 20.7% of their 3-pointers.
For Saint Mary’s, Mitchell Saxen is having an incredible season, scoring 15.0 points and 8.9 rebounds on average. The Gaels are scoring 107.4 points for every 100 possessions on 46.9% shooting from the field, and 42.2% from beyond the 3-point line, which is the 9th best in the nation. They also lean on a stout defense, allowing a mere 88 points per 100 possessions.
