The San Francisco Dons head to Save Mart Center in Fresno, California, to face off against the Fresno State Bulldogs, as the 2022-23 college basketball season continues on Wednesday. The Dons shoot for their third consecutive victory over the Bulldogs. These two non-conference foes meet for the second straight year. Last season, San Francisco outlasted Fresno State 71-63 as home favorites.
The San Francisco Dons have won their first three contests of the season, beating Texas Southern 90-77, Cal Poly 60-48, and California Merced 88-71 in the process. They closed down a three-game homestand last Sunday with a comfortable 17-point victory over the Bobcats, who shot 45.2% from the field and 7-for-18 from beyond the 3-point line.
The Dons went just 7-for-28 from downtown against California Merced. Senior guard Khalil Shabazz led the way for San Francisco with 21 points, four assists, and four steals, while junior big man Volodymyr Markovetskyy added 20 points and a couple of blocks in just 17 minutes on the floor.
Meanwhile, after a 69-56 home victory to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds in their season opener, the Fresno State Bulldogs suffered a 61-54 defeat to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos this past Friday. Playing as 3-point underdogs at the neutral site, the Bulldogs committed 16 turnovers and allowed 14 offensive rebounds to the Gauchos.
Fresno State shot 45.2% from the field and 4-for-12 from downtown against Santa Barbara but struggled to control the glass all day long. Senior guard Isaiah Hill accounted for 12 points, while junior G Donavan Yap and senior G Anthony Holland added eight points apiece.
Both teams are capable of playing tough defense, and San Francisco’s prolific offense should make the difference. This is the clash of the two completely different approaches. While the Dons prefer to push the ball in transition, the Bulldogs love to play at a very slow pace.
