The Youngstown State Penguins will host the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks on the court today. Youngstown State, who currently plays in the Horizon League, is 1-0 on the season while Tenn-Martin of the Ohio Valley Conference sadly lost its opener game on Monday. Tipoff is set to start at 7 p.m ET at the Beeghly Arena in Youngstown State.
Tenn-Martin battled against Pittsburgh in their season opener on Monday, ultimately losing 80-58. It was a pretty rough game for both teams, as first season games typically are, Pittsburgh shot just 36% from the floor and Martin only shot 32%. Pittsburgh did make 11 threes, out of 41 attempts, while the Skyhawks were just 3 for 19 from deep which at last made a difference in the scoreline.
Only one player was in double figures for Martin, KJ Simon, who had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Parker Stewart added only 9 points with 3 steals while Jordan Sears had 8 points. Outside of this opener, hopes are high for the Skyhawks as they are projected to be competing for the Ohio Valley title and league trophy this year. Simon, who averaged 16.9 points per game last time around, was the preseason player of the year. Much is expected of Stewart, who transferred from Indiana going into the 2022-23 season.
The Youngstown State Penguins won their season opener on Monday, beating Canisius at Buffalo 92-81. It was a pretty impressive debut for the Penguins as they shot a whopping 57% from the floor and made 50% of their threes.
Malek Green led the Penguins with 21 points and 12 rebounds while Adrian Nelson had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Dwayne Cohill chipped in with 16 points and 8 rebounds while Brandon Rush scored 15 points off the bench with 4 three-pointers. They held Canisius to 41% shooting on the night.
These two teams don’t have any familiarity with each other as this is the first matchup between the two in recent years. Nevertheless this time around we are leaning towards Youngstown, given how they have started, also taking into account that this is their home opener.
