The New Mexico Lobos will play host to the Boise State Broncos when they meet at University Stadium in New Mexico on Friday. The Lobos’ most recent outing finished in a 41-0 win over the Maine Black Bears when they played at home last week. On a negative note, Boise State took on the Oregon State Beavers in their last match, and it wasn’t good looking at all for them as they picked up a 34-17 defeat. Last season, the Broncos won seven games but they seem to have lost some of that magic from past seasons.
Last week, Taylen Green threw for 155 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception on 19-of-28 passing (67.9%) for the Boise State Broncos in that matchup against the Beavers. He also added 11 carries for 102 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Ashton Jeanty totaled 16 rushing yards on four carries (4.0 yards per carry). He also had six catches for 52 yards. Stefan Cobbs led the receiving charge against the Beavers, catching four passes for 39 yards.
Meanwhile for New Mexico, Miles Kendrick threw for 170 yards against the Black Bears, going 14-for-17 (82.4%) with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 11 carries for 40 yards. Sherod White carried the ball 13 times for 58 yards (4.5 yards per attempt) with two touchdowns. In the passing game, he added two catches for 25 yards. Geordon Porter caught five passes on five targets for 54 yards (10.8 yards per reception), and scored one touchdown.
Boise State’s 7-5 campaign in 2021 marked the school’s fewest wins in a full season since 1998, but Avalos, who previously served as a defensive coach at Oregon, has had time to adjust and can get this Mountain West squad back to its old winning ways. And even though they didn’t have a great start of the season, the Broncos have a solid quarterback they can rely on, and the defense should be fairly similar to last year’s, making them the favorites to win this game.
