On Thursday, Louisiana will try to extend a two-game winning streak when it travels to Southern Miss. The Ragin’ Cajuns are coming off consecutive wins over Marshall and Arkansas State, getting back to a positive record in conference play. Southern Miss is on a two-game winning streak of its own, beating Arkansas State and Texas State in its last two games.
Louisiana has survived a rough stretch of games in late September/early October and is now riding a two-game winning streak coming into this contest. The Ragin’ Cajuns opened the season by covering the spread in a pair of blowout wins over Southeast Louisiana and Eastern Michigan before dropping three straight games against Rice, Louisiana Monroe and South Alabama.
The Ragin’ Cajuns added another great performance last week, blowing out Arkansas State as 6.5-point favorites. They have been without quarterback Chandler Fields and running back Chris Smith the last two weeks due to injuries, but they will both be available on Thursday. Fields opened the season as the starter, but Ben Woolridge has filled in for him recently.
On the other hand, Southern Miss opened the season with one of the craziest games of the year, losing to Liberty in four overtimes. The Golden Eagles then had to play a tough road game at then-No. 15 Miami before picking up a pair of wins over Northwestern State and Tulane at home. Their only loss in conference play came in a 27-10 setback at Troy, but they have responded with wins over Arkansas State and Texas State.
The Golden Eagles rely on their defense that is No. 38 in the FBS in yards allowed per game (349.1). They have struggled to consistently move the ball on offense, ranked 21st-worst in the FBS in yards per game (334.1). Southern Miss had to make a quarterback change this season due to an injury as well, with starter Ty Keyes going down with a season-ending injury.
