The UAB Blazers host the North Texas Mean Green’s next Saturday. North Texas obliterated FIU last week 52-14 as the team reached a 6-4 overall record and 5-1 in Conference USA. On the other hand, the Blazers lost to UTSA in double overtime and comes into this game 4-5 overall and 2-4 in Conference USA.
Austin Aune passed for 384 yards and five touchdowns, all in the first half, and North Texas romped to a 52-14 victory over Florida International on Saturday. Ayo Adeyi ran for a 2-yard touchdown and Aune sandwiched a 45-yard scoring strike to Jordan Smart and a 10-yarder to freshman Var’Keyes Gumms around an Ethan Mooney field goal as North Texas led 24-0 after one quarter.
Aune completed 25 of 34 passes for 414 yards. His only blemishes were a pair of interceptions, the second of which was returned for a Florida International touchdown in the second quarter. Reggie Peterson picked off Aune and returned it 79 yards before fumbling. Teammate Adrian Cole scooped it up and went the final 4 yards for the score.
UAB wasn’t able to get past conference leaders UTSA, but definitely gave them a run for their money, as they took them to double overtime. Jacob Zeno rallied the Blazers, nosing in from the 1-yard line with under five minutes to play in regulation, then dropping a perfect pass into the waiting arms of Trea Shropshire at the 4-yard line for a 38-yard score to tie the game at 31-31 with 15 seconds left, forcing overtime. Zeno was 27-of-38 passing for 332 yards for UAB with two touchdowns and an interception.
North Texas sits just below conference leader UTSA, while UAB is in 8th place. This weekend’s game seems a pretty uneven one, although UAB wants to repeat the good game they played against UTSA and try to win it this time.
