The Oregon State Beavers will travel to face the 12th-ranked Utah Utes during the fifth weekend of the 2022 college football season. Can Oregon State get over its emotional, last-second loss to USC?
Oregon State is coming off of a hard-fought loss at home against USC. Will fifth-year head coach Jonathan Smith continue elevating the program after getting it to seven wins and a Bowl game in 2021? It appears that the Beavers have found their rhythm on offense, averaging 37.8 points per game.
Oregon State has played a much tougher schedule than Utah and held its own against the seventh-ranked USC Trojans led by quarterback Caleb Williams and head coach Lincoln Riley. Trojans running back Travis Dye did average 7.0 YPC but the passing game was much more constrained, as the Beavers surrendered only 180 passing yards and one touchdown.
Meanwhile, Utah is on a tear after suffering a last-minute upset in Gainesville against the University of Florida. The Utes are fresh off of a 34-13 win over Arizona State in its first Pac-12 game of the 2022 season, utilizing a strong dual-threat offense that has a deep running back committee and some of the nation’s best receiving tight ends.
The last time these two teams met, the Utes allowed Oregon State’s former running back, B.J. Baylor, to average 8.0 YPC that produced over 150 rushing yards and a touchdown, effectively moving the chains and keeping Utah’s offense on the sideline. The Utes were up 14-0 and 24-14 in the first half, but the Beavers’ effective running game became too much to handle.
Oregon State lost 52-7 against Utah in 2019, 30-24 in 2020, and finally got over the hump with a 42-34 win under the lights in front of its home crowd in 2021. Utah already has a chip on its shoulder from the unexpected loss to Anthony Richardson and the Gators in Week 1, so factor in the loss from last season, and the Utes likely come out of the gate swinging.
