College football’s second week will feature a great match on Saturday, September 9 at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, when the Arizona Wildcats take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
The Arizona offensive has the oomph to keep up. The defense may be a different story, but the offense got its tune-up in a 38-3 win over Northern Arizona. The running game finally got going after a slow start and scored many touchdowns. With the defense of Mississippi State poised to be tested, quarterback Jayden de Laura, who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns and added another running score, could continue his hot streak.
In a 48-7 victory over Southeast Louisiana, the Bulldogs were never seriously threatened, but it was close until late in the game. Both the offense and defense had some trouble converting on third down, and now they have to contend with a relentless Wildcat attack.
Both the Arizona and Mississippi State defenses have yet to prove their worth, but the latter is fresh off a season in which it excelled against effective passing attacks. After a promising start against the Lumberjacks, the defense struggled mightily on third down in 2022 and failed to produce any pass rush in the season opener against an FCS opponent.
It’s up to QB Will Rogers and the Mississippi State offense to keep throwing and control the clock, as there was only one sack and the offensive didn’t get going until the third quarter. Even if the new era of Bulldog football is more of a rebalancing and slight adjustment than a radical departure, it is still important to have possession of the ball. The possession battle will be won by the home team.
It is hoped that this will be a lot of fun. Both teams are underrated, predicted also-rans in their respective conferences, but they have terrific offenses, veteran quarterbacks, and enough good parts in place to make an immediate impact. The defensive efforts of the Bulldogs will be crucial.
