One more college football craziness will be going down at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette on Saturday. This is the second year in a row that the Orange have played the Boilermakers. Last season, Syracuse was favored by 1.5 points at home and defeated Purdue, 32-29.
The first two weeks of the season have been rather easy for the Syracuse Orange. The Orange dominated Western Michigan 48-7 as a 24.5-point home favorite in Week 2 after a 65-0 Week 1 thrashing of the Colgate Raiders.
The Orange put on a show in the first half last Saturday, and they ended the half with a 45-7 lead. Totaling 496 yards and restricting the Broncos to 318, they won the game. On third down, Syracuse was successful on 8 of 15 attempts for a rate of 90%.
In Week 2, the Orange team lost a couple of key players. Oronde Gadsden, the tight end, sprained his ankle, while David Wohlabaugh, the right tackle, was injured in the leg. At the end of the game, both players were aided by crutches.
The Purdue Boilermakers lost to the Fresno State Bulldogs, 39-35, at home in Week 1. The Boilermakers, who were favored by four points in the season opener but lost to the underdog Virginia Tech Hokies by a score of 24-17 on the road in Week 2, made amends.
In the second half, Purdue defense held Virginia Tech scoreless. The Boilermakers dominated the Hokies 427-286 in total yards and allowed only 11 running yards on 22 attempts. With 38:01 of possession time, Purdue rushed 46 times for 179 yards.
It was the first victory for Ryan Walters’ Boilermakers squad. Hudson Card, a junior quarterback, completed 24 of his 38 pass attempts for 248 yards and added 12 carries for 16 yards and a touchdown.
