We might be looking at a low scoring game at the 2022 LendingTree Bowl on Saturday evening. The Rice Owls go into this matchup with a below than average .500 record, while Southern Miss got one last win in the final week of the regular season. Both teams will have a short trip as the game will be hosted at the Hancock Whitney Stadium, in Mobile, Alabama.
Southern Miss is captained by Frank Gore Jr. ,son of veteran NFL running back Frank Gore Sr. They are under the helm of head coach Will Hall, who pushed the Golden Eagles from a 3-9 record back in 2021 to a 6-6 record in 2022. Southern Miss will be the representative of the Sun Belt West division, which was absolutely filled with incredible teams such as Troy and South Alabama, with the first winning the Conference title.
Rice will be the representative of the Conference USA West division, which had the likes of UTSA dominating the division after finishing 11-2. The Owls are under veteran head coach Mike Bloomgren, who is slowly but surely bringing some attention to the program. Freshman QB AJ Padgett is a key piece for the Owls, who almost was able to steal a huge win over North Texas in the last game of the regular season.
Southern Miss’ main attribute is their great defense that normally carries the game out, as their offensive line is not really proficient. Rice is a polar opposite where their defense is absolutely abysmal, but their offense carries the team as a whole when they wake up on the right foot.
Turnovers are a massive issue for Rice, as they currently concede at least 2 on offense in their last 4 games. This includes a 4 interception match against Western Kentucky, this continued to happen against some of the best defenses in the Conference.
The Golden Eagles are not nearly as prone to turnovers, as in fact is their main strength against most opponents. Rice usually plays through a run-centric playbook, which sadly for them is right up Southern Miss’ alley, as they have not conceded a rushing touchdown in their last 2 games played.
