After quite an unpredictable ride through the regular season, the College Football Playoff stage is finally set to start. The high seed Georgia Bulldogs will battle against the 4th seed Ohio State Buckeyes, while the 2nd seed Michigan Wolverines will look to take the victory against the 3rd seed TCU in the Fiesta Bowl, both matchups as part of the College Football Playoff semifinals stage. The Horned Frogs had a season in the history books with a 12-1 record, while Michigan will walk into the fray through the Big Ten on their way to an undefeated season.
While Michigan has impressed throughout the entire season, part of that was done through a couple of shaky displays. Looking at this past weekend, the Wolverines allowed Purdue to easily make plays, but the Boilermakers were sadly not able to finish the plays in the red zone. Overall, this is a Wolverines squad that can definitely play with confidence if they wake up with the right foot. However, Michigan’s offensive playbook will definitely take some extra effort in this game without RB Blake Corum available to run the football.
The Wolverines are currently placed 6th in rushing success percentage and 9th in EPA per rush created, however part of that was thanks to Corum’s incredible performance in the backfield. When QB J.J. McCarthy is under heavy pressure, his numbers have dramatically fallen down than when he has a clean pocket to play around. TCU’s 3-3-5 defense setup is made and used to get pressure around the QB, this style of play has definitely worked against the majority of QBs this season.
While the Wolverines will still be able to get the attack going, the downfield passing setup will definitely have some difficulty. As for TCU’s offense, they should have a plan set up to hopefully cater to QB Max Duggan’s talents with both his passing and running abilities.
Looking at statistics and head to head matchup, we lean towards a TCU victory.
