Game Preview

A pair of one-loss SEC teams meet in Starkville in hopes of remaining part of the SEC race when the Texas A&M Aggies clash against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday. Mississippi State disposed of non conference Bowling Green on Saturday as the team got back on track after losing to LSU the week prior. They face a Texas A&M team that has responded well to a quarterback change, inserting Max Johnson into the starting role, and winning two games against ranked foes in Miami and Arkansas.

Prior to the season, Mississippi State was considered to be the Aggies’ primary competition behind Alabama for the SEC West title. However, the Bulldogs’ loss at LSU in which they allowed 21 fourth quarter points after a fumbled punt inside their own ten yard line has them at 0-1 in league play has exposed some issues.

For one thing, LSU gained over 200 yards on the ground and while a lot of that came courtesy of quarterback Jaydon Daniels the Bulldogs are missing defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy who is their most important run defender but hasn’t played this season. He’s a big body in the middle of that three man front (that’s often a four man front via alignment) and they’re not quite as big elsewhere throughout their lineup.

The other concerns their pass protection. They lost both starting tackles and left tackle Charles Cross was a first round selection. New right tackle Cameron Jones has been okay; left tackle Kwatrivous Johnson has size but struggles to keep from playing out over his toes (he’s 6-foot-7) which is a hindrance versus speed rushers as well as power rushers (since they can both get him off balance). The duo has combined to allow 22 pressures so far in 2022 and has incurred three penalties.
