Two ACC teams trending in opposite directions will meet on Thursday night when the Virginia Cavaliers clash against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Will there be a reversal with each team coming off of their respective bye weeks? Georgia Tech has rattled off two straight wins since firing head coach Geoff Collins and now faces a sputtering Virginia team that is 2-4 on the year under first year head coach Tony Elliot.
First of all, there is some unfortunate news on the Georgia Tech front, who lost its starting quarterback at the end of their overtime victory against Duke two weeks ago. He is still listed day-to-day, which is worrisome considering the Thursday night kickoff. This is something to keep an eye on as Jeff Sims’ impact is massive for his team.
Georgia Tech hosted Duke and earned a tough 23-20 overtime win. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and led 20-6 early in the fourth quarter, but Duke did not give up. Duke scored the final 14 points, including a game tying touchdown with eight seconds left, to get the game to overtime.
The Yellow Jackets got the win in the first overtime by hitting a field goal. Jeff Sims went 23/34 for 227 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions on the night. Nate McCollum had eight catches for 101 yards and one touchdown in the win. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets allowed 278 total yards and forced one Duke interception.
On the other hand, in their last time out, Virginia hosted the Louisville Cardinals and suffered a disappointing 34-17 defeat. UVA jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, but Louisville went on a 20-0 scoring run to take control of the game.
Virginia made it 20-17, but the Cardinals scored the final 14 points to get the three-score win. Brennan Armstrong went 24/34 for 313 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions on the day. Dantayvion Wicks had four catches for 69 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Defensively, UVA allowed 473 total yards and forced two Louisville interceptions.
