The 2022-23 College Football Bowl season is officially well underway, Washington State and Fresno State will battle in the LA Bowl hosted at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The Bulldogs recently won the Mountain West Conference with a swift 28-16 victory over Boise State. Under the leadership of head coach Jeff Tedford, Fresno State has three 9-win seasons, with a single misstep being a 4-8 season back in 2019.
Washington State sadly was not able to play in the PAC-12 Conference campaign, but it still won 7 games under the captaincy of Head Coach Jake Dickert. The Cougars achieved a 3-3 record with Dickert in 2021, but a tough schedule ultimately helped them reach their high skill ceiling, mainly on the defensive line. Washington State goes into the LA Bowl currently ranked 33rd out of all the FBS programs in points conceded per game, averaging around 22.4. The offense has been stable, scoring at least 28 points in 4 straight games.
Both teams are dealing with a couple of injuries, which shows that we might have quite an interesting game with a couple of main line switches. Fresno State is captained by senior QB Jake Haener, who started his career in the PAC-12 before he transferred to the Bulldogs, where he has definitely flourished under Jeff Tedford playing style. Haener is averaging 72.6 percent completion rate while showcasing a pretty good 6:1 touchdown to interception ratio. He plays besides notable pieces such as senior running back Jordan Mims, who currently achieved 1,100 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns as a ball runner for the Bulldogs.
Washington State will need to try and suppress Mims as much as possible, forcing Haener to drop back in the pocket and apply pressure in that zone. His favorite passing targets are wideS Jalen Cropper and Nikko Remigio, who each have 5 touchdowns in the season. The good news for the Cougars is how their defense has improved through the season, forcing at least 2 turnovers per match.
This time around we think Haener’s ability will stand tall, as such we lean towards a Washington State win.
