Game Preview

If someone had told Panthers fans in Week 6 that their team would battle for a playoff spot in Week 17, they most likely would have laughed. Well, ten weeks later, Carolina will attempt to take down Tom Brady and the Buccaneers offense in order to earn the right to a playoff berth.

After the Panthers fired Matt Rhule following the 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5, Steve Wilks did an outstanding job of rebuilding this team. Wilks has handled every challenge that has come his way with ease, from releasing a trio of explosive and dangerous running backs in D’Onta Foreman, Chuba Hubbard, and Raheem Blackshear to being willing to take the hot hand at quarterback.

It should be remembered that Wilks’ 21-3 thumping of the Buccaneers was his first triumph as interim head coach at Carolina. There were no turnovers, but the Panthers’ defense limited Tampa Bay to just three drives of more than 30 yards.

The Buccaneers have not been playing good soccer over the past five weeks, and a Carolina win would not seem so far-fetched. With two more victories to finish the year, Wilks would be 7-5 overall, a considerably more respectable record than his 1-4 start and more than deserving of consideration for the long-term position.

Tampa Bay’s future, however, is not very promising even though they appeared to have a chance of winning the NFC South at first. However, Tampa’s hopes have been hurt by numerous lackluster performances and serious injuries. The offense has benefited from Rachaad White replacing Leonard Fournette as the main rusher, but injuries to the offensive line continue to be a problem.

While the defense got off to a strong start, some games have since slipped away from them, with three opponents this season scoring 34 points or more. Carolina lacks the offensive consistency necessary to cause that kind of harm. The relentless full-speed offensive will quickly slow down the pace and prevent the Buccaneers from making many mistakes.
