Cincinnati Bengals vs New Orleans Saints: Preview & Analysis 10/16/2022

Game Preview

Game Preview

A pair of 2-3 clubs meet in the Big Easy Sunday when Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals head down for a bout with the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome. It’s Burrow’s first appearance at the Superdome since winning the National Championship with LSU in 2020. It’s also a chance for Andy Dalton to get some revenge against his former team in Cincinnati.

After a 338-yard season debut, Burrow hasn’t reached 300 passing yards again this season and was held to just 217 and a lone touchdown throw in Week 5. The Bengals still rank 12th in passing yards but that expected next step hasn’t been made by Cincinnati’s offense, yet.

A big reason for that is Joe Mixon and his lack of production. Mixon’s currently averaging 3.1 yards per carry on 96 rushes and has one of Cincinnati’s two rushing touchdowns this season. The Bengals are one of 11 NFL teams averaging under 100 rushing yards per game yet are 10th in rushes per game.

Tee Higgins was active with an ankle issue last week but didn’t catch a ball in the loss at Baltimore. Higgins should play in Week 6, but it’s something to monitor as injury reports roll in.

Now looking at the Saints, Dalton was the starter and every-down quarterback last week, but it was the Taysom Hill show. New Orleans’ gadget quarterback exploded for four touchdowns against Seattle, three of which coming on nine rushes that went for 112 yards.

Hill also threw a 22-yard score to fellow “tight end” Adam Trautman. Alvin Kamara posted a season-high 194 scrimmage yards in the win but is still looking for his first major of the season.

The Saints got gashed for 151 rushing yards on 7.2 yards per Seattle rush attempt, so expect Sunday to be a get-right outing for the run defense. And if not, New Orleans’ 24th-ranked run defense will remain an issue.
