Jaguars vs Commanders: Picks & Analysis 6/17/2022

June 17, 2022

Last year was supposed to be a proverbial one for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence. Considered by many as the best generational talent to enter the league sin Andrew Luck, with a head coach of the pedigree of Urban Meyer and a team backing him with a true and tried hunger to win, everything was supposed to go as peachy as ever for Lawrence and Jacksonville, and yet, here we are in 2022 remembering how much of a train wreck the year 2021 ended up being for the Jaguars. But now, with a new head coach in former Eagles skipper Doug Pederson, as well as a whole new mentality going around the team, the Washington Commanders, who have also gone through some serious changes this offseason will be their first opponents of the season. Will the Jaguars start out the season with a win, or will the bad luck continue on in 2022?

Game Preview

It’s not farfetched to say and understand that one man does not make a team. Tom Brady had a great backing core, as well as Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. That’s why Jacksonville understands that Trevor Lawrence alone could not be the answer to all of their problems and that in order to turn this team’s losing mentality around big changes needed to be done is something that could very well become a pivotal move to this team’s success in 2022. Lawrence had an underwhelming season to say the least in 2021, and now in his 2nd year in the league, with a much better backing core both on offense and defense, as well as most importantly from the coaching position, better things shall come for the Jaguars.

Still though, when thinking about their game against Washington, a team who will be starting a whole new era on offense as former Eagles and Colts QB Carson Wentz takes over the starting role for the team, it’s definitely not Wentz who Jacksonville should be worried about. It’s Washington’s defense, led by Chase Young who they should fear.

Washington has an advantage here because of various reasons. Firstly, Wentz at top level, with the offensive help he has from his core of receivers, running backs and others can play better than Lawrence, mainly because of experience in the pros. Secondly, Washington’s offensive line is one of the best in the NFC, something that Jacksonville’s defense will have loads of trouble trying to get past. Lastly, Washington’s defense is scary when in synch, which could end up meaning a world of troubles for Lawrence and company.

Both teams are likely to go in positive ways throughout this season, with some very good changes in both franchises, but in week 1, in Washington, the Commanders should be able to score an easy win.
