On Monday night, a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game concludes Week 4 as the Rams visit the 49ers. The old adage is that it’s very hard to beat the same team three times in an NFL season, with the third meeting having to be in the postseason. It was proven true last year, though. The Niners won both regular-season meetings against the Rams, including a 27-24 OT victory in Week 18 in Los Angeles that got San Francisco into the playoffs.
They would meet again in the NFC Championship Game and the Rams prevailed 20-17 in what many thought would be Jimmy Garoppolo’s final game with the 49ers. Garoppolo went 1-for-6 for -3 yards and an interception on his final two drives. Matthew Stafford passed for 337 yards and hit Cooper Kupp with two touchdown passes for Los Angeles, which began the fourth quarter down 17-7. The Rams had lost six straight to their northern neighbors.
The Rams still look a bit like they are dealing with a Super Bowl hangover but improved to 2-1 with Sunday’s 20-12 win at Arizona. Matthew Stafford was 18-for-25 for 249 yards but no TDs, with Cam Akers and receiver Cooper Kupp each having a rushing score. It was Kupp’s ninth straight game with at least one TD and his first career on the ground. LA was outgained 365-339 and held the ball for only about 26 minutes.
On the other side, San Francisco lost starting QB Trey Lance to a season-ending injury in Week 2 and that offense managed just 10 points Sunday in a one-point loss in Denver. Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 211 yards, a TD and a pick. Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle made his season debut off injury and had four catches for 28 yards. Arguably the NFL’s best left tackle, Trent Williams, injured his ankle and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
