An Atlantic Division showdown between two teams, one, the Florida Panthers who hold the best record in the league this season, and the other, the Boston Bruins, who have clinched their spot in the playoffs, will go down tonight in Boston as the Bruins try to show the Panthers why when they play at home, stopping them is one of the most gargantuan tasks around. Given that both teams have already secured their spot in this season’s playoffs, and considering that Boston already won their last encounter at home against Florida, all the way back in late October of last year, could we be in for another Bruins win tonight?
It’s funny how even if you hold the best record in the league there are times where you can still be humbled by your opponent. That exactly is what happened to the Panthers on Sunday when they saw their commanding 13-game winning streak come to a dire end at the hands of another Atlantic Division, playoff bound team, the Tampa Bay Lightning by 8-4. Still, though, the Panthers hold the division and are sole owners of the top seed in the Eastern Conference this season moving towards the playoffs.
Given that they hold so much equity going into the postseason, it’s not hard to understand why the Panthers don’t really have much to play for in the last games of the season. But that doesn’t mean by any way that they will show up to Bruins ice for a nice skate and stretching session. Expect Panthers goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovsky and company to show up and show out against the Bruins tonight, especially if it will help to recover and clean up after their loss against the Lightning.
For the Bruins, a win against Florida would not only help them take their present two-game winning streak to three, but also put the rest of Eastern Conference playoff bound squads on notice that they will be bringing it when the postseason comes around.
But it’s not just the two-game win streak for Boston, it’s how good they’ve been looking as of lately, having won four of their last five games, and taking eight of the last eleven games at home. So, if you add one and one, it shouldn’t be as hard to figure that yes, Boston can play some very good hockey at home.
Unlike the Panthers, the Bruins will have plenty to play for, as they are only three points behind Tampa Bay for the 3rd place in their division and have the Capitals riding their coat tails in the race for the first playoff wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, just three points behind them. A main key will be how good goalkeeper Linus Ullmark and Boston’s defense play tonight, because if they come out strong from the beginning, Boston could be looking at a more comfortable scenario moving forward.
