The New York Rangers had one simple task at hand in game 5 of their series against the Lightning. Win at home and take full control of the series, but then the Lightning showed the Rangers what a true and tried championship-caliber team can do when it’s crunch time and now, after having Tampa Bay flip the series back in their favor, game 6 is upon us. As both teams get ready to head back to Florida, the scenario paints itself as a clear win or bust situation for the Rangers, while for the Lightning it’s win and move on to their third straight Stanley Cup finals appearance in as many years.
The Tampa Bay Lightning broke off the streak that this series had held up quite tightly up until game 5. Where before game 5 both teams had won their previous home games, the Lightning showed up at MSG on Thursday night and put on quite a hockey clinic against a Rangers team that was baffled by injuries to their front line and not truly knowing how to deal with the pressure of having to face the best team in the postseason for the past three years and running.
While it was expected for Tampa Bay to be one of the biggest threats in this postseason, if not the biggest, for many experts New York truly stood a chance of being able to take the series with certain comfort only to be stopped in their tracks by a Lightning offense that took advantage of a Rangers defense that has been in a sort of decline for the past few games, something seriously unexpected from a defensive line that was considered the 2nd best in the regular season this year.
Now, as the series heads back to Tampa Bay for what could be the last game of the series, it is more than obvious that all the advantages will be on the Lightning’s side of the ice. Still though, if the Rangers can regroup offensively, the Lightning will surely have to work hard as twice if they wish to close out the series without the need of a game 7 in New York.
For the Rangers, it’s time that they take their now famous #NoQuitInNY seriously as a win in game six to force one last showdown for a chance to make it to the Stanley Cup will be on the line on Saturday. New York looked all sorts of bad on defense in game 5, making mistakes that cannot be afforded anymore, especially against a team as lethal on offense as the Lightning. New York has the tools on offense to set the Lightning defense on fire, but while the offense can perform sublimely once again, it’s New York’s defense that will be the key for either forcing a game 7 in MSG or packing up and waiting for next season.
