Tampa Bay Lightning vs Colorado Avalanche: Analysis & Picks 6/16/2022

June 16, 2022

The Colorado Avalanche struck first and they struck hard in the first game of the 2022 Stanley Cup finals as they took down the reigning cup Champions Tampa Bay Lightning by 4-3 in a game full of thrills, excitement and above all, goals. Of course, starting out the series with a win is always the best scenario, but capitalizing on that and striking again in game 2 will be a definite must for the Avalanche as they host the Lightning once again for the second game of the series. Will Colorado be able to keep their momentum going in front of their home crowd and gain a very valuable 2-win lead before heading to Tampa, or will the Lightning strike back, even out the series and take the hype back home to continue on their quest for the Stanley Cup three-peat?

Game Preview

The Colorado Avalanche went out on the ice in game one and showed the world why their offense is considered one of the best, if not the best in the NHL all around this season. If any proof is needed of this, just look at Colorado’s numbers in this postseason, where 16 out of the 21 players in their roster have scored at least once in the playoffs. If that doesn’t tell you that this team has some serious firepower when it comes to going on the offensive, then you should probably start paying better attention. What is true though is that for the Avalanche to be able to score another win, they need to play much better on defense. In series like these it’s where that old sport saying that “offenses win games, defenses win championships” comes into play in such a great manner.

One of the keys that has made the Tampa Bay Lightning such a strong team in these past years when it comes to postseason playing, is that they are a strong team on every line of the ice. Yes, in game one of this year’s Stanley Cup finals they suffered greatly at the hands of Nathan MacKinnon and company, but, the same story happened with the Rangers and look at how it all turned out for New York. Colorado can score as many goals as they want, but if they allow Tampa Bay enough chances to breathe and move on offense, they will take it, run with it and never look back. At the end of the day, the score in game 1 was 4-3, not a blowout or anything else.

Game 2 will definitely be a toss up between who can play the smartest hockey. If Colorado can manage to even out their powers on all lines, aside from having the advantage of playing on home ice, in front of their crowd, then score a W for the Avalanche. If Tampa Bay decides to turn up the heat on their playing, it doesn’t matter that Colorado does, championship pedigree beats anything.
