Game Preview

Aston Villa, who just defeated Tottenham Hotspur in an outstanding and well-deserved victory, will return to the West Midlands on Wednesday to play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League derby. In their most recent game, Unai Emery’s team defeated the Lilywhites 2-0 while the visitors were defeated 1-0 by Manchester United.

Although Unai Emery didn’t exactly make an impression while he was at Arsenal, Gooners around the nation were thrilled to watch their former manager guide Aston Villa to a convincing victory over Tottenham, whose terrible attacking display undoubtedly made life easier for the Lions.

Hugo Lloris misplayed Douglas Luiz’s long-range attempt with 50 minutes remaining, allowing Ollie Watkins to set up Emiliano Buendia for the goal. Later in the second half, Luiz scored after receiving a lovely ball from John McGinn. The Emery revolution is picking up steam at Villa Park, but the Lions are still outside the top half of the standings for the time being and are two points behind 10th-place Brentford.

Only three of Villa’s last 10 Premier League home games have ended in defeat, but for the more superstitious supporters, it’s a bad omen despite the team’s nine points and eight goals in their first four Premier League games under Emery. Watford, Wolves, and West Ham United have all defeated Villa in the Premier League seven times in a row, which is an incredible trend.

Wolves lost their New Year’s Eve match against Manchester United, who resisted pressure from Julen Lopetegui’s team before the sucker punch hit in the 76th minute. Sadly for Wolves, there was to be no “W” next to their name. Marcus Rashford’s impact replacement for the Red Devils after being benched for being late to a team meeting paid off as the England international scored the game’s only goal.

There were many positives for Lopetegui at Molineux, but Wolves now find themselves in a precarious spot near the bottom of the standings after their 10th loss of the year. They are currently in 19th place and are one point behind West Ham United in 17th place. Last season, Wolves defeated Aston Villa twice, winning 3-2 at Villa Park and 2-1 at Molineux.
