In their most recent Premier League games, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur came out on opposite ends of 2-0 scores. On Wednesday night, these two teams will meet again for a London derby at Selhurst Park. Last time out, Patrick Vieira’s team cruised to victory against Bournemouth, but the lackluster Lilywhites were rendered useless in a two-goal loss to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
Against Bournemouth, two corner routines produced the goals in a comfortable victory for Palace at the Vitality Stadium. Jordan Ayew scored his first goal of the year on Michael Olise’s first pass, and after a well-executed move in which the former found Eberechi Eze to increase the Eagles’ advantage after 36 minutes, Palace soon put Fulham’s nine-man and three-goal setback behind them.
Palace is now in a decent 11th place in the table and is only one point behind Brentford for 10th place, but that may all change if the Bees win their game against Liverpool on Monday night. Palace is starting the new year with the goal of improving its top-half credentials. Selhurst Park has recently shown to be a real stumbling block for visiting teams, barring clubs from the capital, and defeat to Fulham prevented Palace from putting together a four-game Premier League winning streak there.
Antonio Conte, who has never been one to hold his tongue regarding Tottenham’s problems, freely acknowledged that fifth place may be the Lilywhites’ highest point after they put on a lackluster offensive display against Villa, who rightly left North London with all three points secured.
Emiliano Buendia took advantage of a Hugo Lloris error to open the scoring, and Douglas Luiz added a 2nd goal in the 73rd minute after a skillful combination between John McGinn and Douglas Luiz. Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, who won all three of his North London derbies as the Gunners manager, did not lose a single one of his three matches.
Tottenham may have easily taken down Palace 3-0 on Boxing Day 2021, but the Spurs have a dismal home record. The Eagles are unbeaten in four home games against Spurs in all competitions, and they also registered a stunning 3-0 victory over a Nuno Espirito Santo-led squad last season.
