After picking up their second trophy of the year, Inter Milan will welcome Atalanta BC to San Siro on Saturday with their sights firmly set on the grand prize. With just two rounds left, Inter leads their visitors by four points in the race for a top-four finish in Serie A, leaving La Dea playing catch-up as the season draws to a close.
Inter moved one step closer to completing a cup trifecta of the Coppa, Supercoppa Italiana, and – the final, most prestigious piece of the puzzle – the Champions League on Wednesday by defeating Fiorentina and winning their second straight Coppa Italia. Next month, they will face Manchester City in the Champions League final, but in the interim, they must concentrate on winning their way back into the continent’s premier club championship.
The Nerazzurri have recently stormed into form, with last week’s 3-1 loss to new champions Napoli being the only blemish on a run of eight victories from nine games – and Inzaghi chose a weaker squad in Naples. Meanwhile, their Bianconeri colleagues have now been penalized once more. Inter have scored seven goals in each of their last two home Serie A games, which is more than they had in their previous eight games, and they will now try to sweep their local rivals for the first time since 2015 this weekend when Atalanta visits.
Atalanta, which lost 3-2 to Inter in Bergamo in the teams’ first meeting in November, travels to Milan in need of a victory in order to keep alive its slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season after being eliminated from the competition this year. They are three points behind Milan and four points behind Saturday’s opponents, so they do not control their own destiny in that aspect.
For Serie A’s perennial overachievers, a spot in the Conference League or Europa League would still be a nice reward, and trends indicate that might ultimately be their fate: In addition to failing to score in five of their last eight matches against Inter at San Siro, Atalanta has given up goals in each of their last six away games.
