After the international break, Napoli will return to domestic action on Saturday seeking to bounce back from their most recent loss. After a rare loss in 2023’s Italian Serie A before the break, the champions will need to get back on track if they are to reclaim their title.
Napoli had won consecutive games prior to that setback and were sitting pretty atop the table. But a loss to Lazio in Naples ended their perfect start to the new season.
Considering how both teams had begun the season, this result came as a huge surprise. Piotr Zielinski scored the lone goal for Napoli in the loss. The away team’s performance was outstanding, and Genoa might want to try a similar strategy this weekend.
With only one victory through their first three games, Genoa will be feeling ambivalent about their season so far. However, sitting at 14th in the Serie A rankings after two losses is cause for concern at this early point.
Before the international break, they suffered their second road loss of the season, a 1-0 setback to Torino. To be fair, Genoa appeared to have done enough to salvage a draw from that matchup, but Torino scored with essentially the game’s final kick in the 94th minute to steal all three points.
Napoli has a fantastic record in this matchup, having won four of the five previous meetings between these two teams. But Genoa may feel good about themselves because they won both of those games back in February of 2021. That victory, though, is their only one in the last 20 games between the teams in Serie A.
Napoli will be looking to get back on track this weekend, and with a strong head-to-head record in this matchup, they should be difficult to beat.
