New York Jets – Established 1959

The History of the New York Jets begins in 1959 when the Titans of New York was founded. The Titans were an original member of the American Football League (AFL) but the team never really caught on with fans. Despite having a home base in the biggest city in the USA, the team had little success playing at the Polo Grounds during their first three seasons.
 
Then, in 1964, the team rebranded to the New York Jets and moved into Shea Stadium. It was around this same time that the Jets signed QB Joe Namath to a then-record contract. In 1967 the Jets had their first winning season and secured the AFL Championship in 1968. This gave them a slot in Super Bowl II against the reigning champion Baltimore Colts. The Jets ended up winning a massive upset in what would be their only Super Bowl to date. But, the win did a lot to convince the NFL that the AFL was on equal ground. This led to the two leagues merging in 1970.
 
Despite their role in the merger, the Jets fell into a period of losing seasons. Namath struggled after the merger and only had a few good years after 1970. Predictably, the Jets spiraled downward into a tailspin that would last into the 1980s. The Jets managed to play their way into the 1982 AFC Championship Game thanks to a legendarily good defensive line Dubbed “The Sack Exchange” the line consisted of Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Marty Lyons, and Abdul Salaam. But, they were unable to lead New York back to a Super Bowl and the team fell apart again in the 1990s.
 
It was at this point that the Jets managed to lure a disgruntled Bill Parcells over from the New England Patriots in 1997. The Hall-of-Fame coach led New York to the AFC Championship Game in 1998, but the success was short-lived. After then-owner Leon Hess died in 1999, Parcells stepped down and gave the job to his assistant Bill Belichick. Belichick resigned less than 24 hours later and went on to become the legend he is today with the New England Patriots.
 
Woody Johnson purchased the franchise in 2000 and the franchise would go on to make five playoff appearances in the next 10 years. In 2009, Johnson would bring in Rex Ryan to take over as head coach in an attempt to become the best defense in the NFL. They would go on to draft Mark Sanchez with the No. 5 overall pick in the subsequent draft. Ryan and Sanchez led the Jets out of the basement and to back-to-back AFC title games. But, after those first two years, the Jets didn’t make the playoffs again during Ryan and Sanchez’s time in New York.
 
In fact, the Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010 in one of the worst streaks in the league. The Jets are stuck in a perpetual rebuild that may continue well into 2022 and beyond.
