2022 World Cup Futures: Group A

The FIFA World Cup in Qatar is finally here after some extra months of waiting since this year it takes place in December and not June-July. Group A is going to be the first one in action, as Qatar will open the World Cup against a young and fast Ecuadorian squad.

The home team wants to open up big and will be relying on their offensive end to do damage to Ecuador. Al-Haydos, Afif and Ali are Qatar’s attacking threat, while goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb and left-back Abdelkarim Hassan will look to keep their goal safe on the defensive end.

Ecuador has one of the youngest squads in South America and was able to occupy the 4th place slot in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers. Piero Hincapie, Bayer Leverkusen’s center back, leads their defense at only 20 years old. In midfield, Moises Caicedo will be in charge of the playmaking at only 21 years old, playing for Premier League side, Brighton.

Senegal will also take part in this group, the new African champions will try to do better than their last World Cup participation in Russia and try to at least reach the quarterfinals, just like they did in Korea-Japan 2002. Without a doubt, Senegal’s main star is Bayern Munich forward, Sadio Mane, who will be commanding their offense. Kalidou Koulibaly will do his part in the defensive end of Senegal’s team to try to reach the knockout round.

Topping the group off is the Netherlands, who made it back to the World Cup after missing the competition in 2018. Virgil Van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay will go all-out to try to bring the Netherlands back to the top football tier, after their semifinal participation in Brazil 2014.

This group will be an all-out battle between the Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador for the two spots in the knockout round. Qatar will not stand a chance against these three teams.
