Lionel Messi will meet Robert Lewandowski as two of the best strikers on the planet go head-to-head in a World Cup Group C showdown in Qatar, with Argentina and Poland drawn against each other.
Argentina, with Lionel Scaloni as the lead, will be looking to finally win the World Cup in what seems to be Lio Messi’s last World Cup participation. They’ve built a strong team around Messi and won the Copa America in 2021, which gives them hope for Qatar 2022. The “Scaloneta” currently has a 35-game unbeaten streak and are only 2 games shy of Italy’s 37-game streak.
Poland qualified for their second straight World Cup, after missing two straight in 2010 and 2014. The team commanded by Robert Lewandowski will try to get the upset wins against Argentina and Mexico and reach the knockout stage, which they haven’t done since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Their best participations have been in Germany 1974 and Spain 1982, where they finished in third place.
The Mexicans are at it again. The “Azteca’s” haven’t missed a World Cup since Italy 1990 and they’ve reached the round of 16 every time. However, that seems to be their limit and criticism in their country grows with each elimination. Mexico has never been able to reach a fifth game in a World Cup, something that both the USA and Costa Rica (both CONCACAF rivals) have already done. The Mexicans have a tough challenge ahead, as they go head-to-head with Argentina and Poland.
The underdog in Group C is undoubtedly Saudi Arabia. They’ve qualified for their second straight World Cup, and they seem to play better football each time, however, only in USA 1994 have they reached the knockout stage.
This is going to be one of the most interesting groups to watch, as Argentina, Poland and Mexico fight for only two spots in the knockout round.
