Game Preview

Group E leaders Spain are facing off against the second-placed Japan in an intriguing 2022 World Cup encounter at the Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday. Both teams failed to claim maximum points in their last group match, with Spain finishing with a disappointing draw with Germany, while Japan picking up a defeat against Costa Rica.

Hajime Moriyasu’s team remain in the lookout to move on to the last 16 for the second successive World Cup, and they know that a win against 2010 world champions Spain will see them qualify. A draw could be enough to edge them through if Costa Rica fails to beat Germany, or if the latter fails to win by two goals or more, but a loss against Spain would definitely knock them out of the competition.

Whether Japan, the nation ranked 24th in the world by FIFA, can pull off another upset on Thursday remains to be seen, Moriyasu will make sure his team put aside their most recent result and instead try to replicate their performance against Germany. Japan have never faced Spain in a competitive fixture before, and their only previous meeting was back in April 2001 when Spain secured a 1-0 friendly victory.

Now looking at Spain, while recent reports are suggesting that head coach Luis Enrique is already set to step down at the end of the World Cup and return to management, the 52-year-old is fully focused on his job and his side requires just a draw against Japan to make it out of the group stage for the fifth time in the last six finals.

They will definitely be confident of returning to winning ways as they have never got defeated in five previous World Cup meetings against Asian teams in 90 minutes. A penalty-shootout loss to South Korea all the way back in 2002 is one small stain in their books.

Spain has also won almost every single one of their last group fixtures at the World Cup, eight of their last nine participations to be exact. The only result that wasn’t positive was a 2-2 draw against Morocco in 2018 during this run.
