Both Cub Swanson and Hakeem Dawodu want to get back into the win column, with the more seasoned Swanson being considered the underdog by most people. This Saturday night’s co-main event at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas features two featherweights, Cub Swanson and Hakeem Dawodul, who both enter the bout trying to bounce back from losses.
It’s safe to assume that Swanson has seen his best days in the past. The soon-to-be 40-year-old has been more unsuccessful than successful in recent years, losing six of his last nine bouts.
While he does have a losing record, it’s important to remember that three of his defeats have come at the hands of rated fighters (Brian Ortega, Renato Moicano, and Giga Chikadze), and that he also lost by tight decision to Frankie Edgar and Shane Burgos.
Swanson has a significant advantage due to his extensive background. Dawodu will be fighting in his 10th UFC bout, while Swanson will be fighting in his 22nd. Swanson is ranked third all-time in the division’s win total and has fought alongside legends such as Max Holloway, Dustin Poirier, and Charles Oliveira.
Dawodu has only faced one presently ranked opponent, Movsar Evloev, and was thoroughly defeated by him, being brought down nine times in the first three rounds.
Although Swanson doesn’t rely much on takedowns, they may be his greatest chance at winning. Two of his last three opponents have ended the bout with kicks, so it’s best to tread carefully when facing Dawodu, who isn’t particularly skilled on the mat.
On Saturday, expect the seasoned vet to rely heavily on his wrestling and grappling, as Swanson has the fourth-best takedown accuracy percentage in the history of the featherweight division.
A clear case may be made for Dawodu, even though the experience gap is obvious. In a best case scenario, he should have the upper hand because he deals more damage and takes less than Swanson.
