UFC Vegas 78’s main card features middleweights Josh Fremd and Jamie Pickett in an anticipated and intense middleweight fight that is sure to be entertaining. Both fighters have been active in MMA for some time, yet recently both have found themselves on the losing end.
Under the spotlights, Jamie Pickett has discovered that things are even harder. He defeated Laureano Staropoli and Joseph Holmes by unanimous decision to earn his initial two UFC victories, but he has lost his last three contests by submission. His UFC record fell to 2-5 after Kyle Daukaus submitted him, getting knocked out by Denis Tiuliulin, and subsequently submitted once more by Bo Nickal.
Pickett is looking to save his place on the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster with a victory there. While he boasts good striking and submission skills, he can get lost on the ground due to poor takedown defense abilities and can struggle when being cornered. Pickett stands much to gain here as his UFC future remains tenuous, so he will have to show that he still has what it takes to win big fights in the UFC.
Josh Fremd made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship a year ago and currently holds a record of 1-2. He stepped in to face Anthony Hernandez in 2022 as a substitute and lost by unanimous decision due to superior skill. He afterwards encountered Tresean Gore and was ensnared in his powerful guillotine. He greeted newcomer Sedriques Dumas into the octagon under intense pressure and executed his own guillotine to launch his UFC career.
Fremd is the superior grappler between these two. He’s an outstanding clinch striker with an outstanding grip who is also adept at finishing fights on the ground, as evidenced by his guillotine choke win against Sedriques Dumas; 95% of significant strikes from clinch were targeted directly at Dumas’ head.
