The co-main event of this weekend’s UFC Fight Night at The Apex features Bryce Mitchell and Dan Ige, two of the best featherweights in the world. Since his defeat to Ilia Topuria, Mitchell has been embroiled in controversy, but Ige is ready to reclaim his position as a dark horse contender in the category.
The odds are in Bryce Mitchell’s favor, thus he should win the battle, right? He has a strong ground game, an area where Ige has traditionally been weak. But I’m going to cautiously support Mitchell.
He’s been out of commission for nine months, considered retirement after taking the Topuria loss hard, and is currently dealing with private concerns rendered private after an ex-girlfriend destroyed his fruit trees.
Ige, in contrast to Mitchell, is not engaging in this conflict with an eye on the exits. He has defeated Damon Jackson and Nate Landwehr in consecutive bouts and is looking to reestablish himself as a top contender by starting another lengthy winning streak. Ige won six in a row from 2018-2020, but he has subsequently gone 3-3 and has been knocked out of title contention with a loss to Calvin Kattar.
A relentless wrestler like Mitchell is too much for even Ige to handle. As we witnessed in Mitchell’s victory against Edson Barbosa, Ige won’t be able to coast to victory by stuffing a couple takedowns. Ige is retreating so that Mitchell won’t touch him, but he’ll soon be forced to the ground.
Mitchell will have a major impact on the outcome of this fight. Mitchell plans to stalk Ige and fire in for takedowns, while Ige uses jabs, footwork, and takedown defense to avoid trouble. Depending on Mitchell’s level of aggression, this battle may or may not be one for action fans.
