Alexandre Pantoja endured considerable challenges to earn his first title shot and then accomplished the unexpected to secure it. Now the champion, he will face Brandon Royval again at UFC 296 this Saturday as part of its co-main event and look to defend against an old adversary in order to maintain his status as UFC featherweight champion.
This will be their second meeting; their initial contest in 2021 saw Pantoja win by way of a second-round rear-naked choke submission victory; however, Royval has since held onto victory by winning three consecutive fights.
Pantoja seemed to possess superior standup ability during their first fight; however, it was close and he needed to work for every advantage. Going forward in their rematch he can do even more to increase its effectiveness.
Pantoja, who hails from Brazil, boasts the ability to use counter right hands that should prove fatal for Royval’s style. Furthermore, Pantoja possesses enough foot speed and strength to take Royval down and punish him in the clinch – particularly from back mount.
Champion Pantoja stands out in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a black belt from that program and can attack submissions from different angles – taking down opponents at an incredible 49% rate on his mats. But his biggest asset remains grappling. He can strike submissions from multiple directions using this skill set, making him a serious threat on any mat.
Pantoja was successful at neutralizing Royval with his wrestling in their initial fight and can use that same talent against him again in this rematch. While Royval has made strides since losing out to Pantoja, more needs to be done if he hopes to challenge for the flyweight title.
There has to be a little modification performed for Brandon. Royval has the resources to be reckless with his feet and to lose on a few occasions. But while on the mat, Royval has to concentrate on getting back up on his feet rather than putting up submissions.
