Leon Edwards will defend his welterweight championship against Colby Covington this Saturday at UFC 296 in what could be one of the year’s defining rematches, with Edwards facing Covington in an eventful main event bout that pits two talented strikers against each other and results in multiple submission wins for Covington. Edwards may possess great striking skills but will face off against someone with superior movement on feet as well as formidable wrestling techniques, potentially setting himself up for an exhausting night for Edwards himself.
Edwards joined the UFC as BAMMA champion when he signed in 2015. His last loss came in a Hail Mary head-kick knockout against Kamaru Usman in 2016. Since then he has gone undefeated against Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Rafael dos Anjos, and Nate Diaz among many other opponents. Edwards possesses significant power with some occasional misses that leave him open to counter punchers’ attack; yet can get hit easily from counterpunches or be unbalanced easily when using his strikes to his advantage.
Covington, the former champion in his division and one of the most loathed fighters in sport. His profanity-laced trash talker style and offensive wrestling ability has caused havoc for many men he’s faced in battle, with Covington known for being difficult and an intimidating opponent. This bout will not be easy for either fighter, with Covington known to use his style tenaciously against opponents while making for difficult matchups against his competitors.
Covington will seek to close distance quickly, so Edwards should use kicks as a means to keep him at a safe distance while avoiding takedown attempts from Covington’s double leg takedown which often ends with rear body locks followed by back and pound or ground and pound attacks from him.
Edwards must avoid being bullied by Covington in their standup bout and instead focus on counter-grappling to gain top position when possible. It is also crucial that Edwards doesn’t fall into the cycle of working up with Covington only to bring him down afterwards. While not a dominant fighter on the bottom, Covington can control positions and wait for mistakes from his opponent to strike. Edwards must remain patient and calm throughout this fight in order to have any chance at victory, otherwise it could quickly escalate beyond control of one man against the other.
