Fight Preview
This Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 228 event in Las Vegas has a number of exciting matchups, including a lightweight contest between Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot. Both fighters have lost recently, ending whatever hope they had of competing for the lightweight championship.
Whoever wins this battle on Saturday will be back in contention for a title bout, while the loser will likely never get another shot.
At UFC 286, Fiziev lost a devastating defeat to Justin Gaethje. The Azerbaijani, who was on a six-fight winning streak, was beaten by a majority decision after three rounds. It was a close race, but Gaethje was the deserving victor. He secured the lone takedown in the bout and landed more important blows.
The UFC record of Gamrot is impressive, but he could be on a three-fight losing run. Even his recent victories over Arman Tsarukyan and Jalin Turner were decided by razor-thin margins, and he regularly needs to pile up takedowns in order to squeak through in the later rounds. Fiziev possesses a takedown defense of 90%, and he has the speed and distance management to avoid being taken down.
In a five-round main event, does Gamrot have a chance to knock out Fiziev? With his persistent wrestling, Gamrot definitely has the upper hand, but Fiziev has the muscle and takedown defense to keep the fight standing and harm Gamrot with his punches.
Because of his tendency toward linear striking, Gamrot is sometimes vulnerable to being hit. However, he has been knocked down by the likes of Turner, Tsarukyan, Beneil Dariush, and Guram Kutateladze, despite the fact that he has never finished in his career.
In those fights, he showed remarkable resilience, but against someone like Fiziev, who can string together combinations and land big blows, his inclination to be cracked and faith in his chin will cost him.
