UFC 293 takes place at Sydney, Australia’s Qudos Bank Arena, and features a bout between Tai Tuivasa and the dangerous Alexander Volkov, two of the world’s top ten heavyweights. In front of his home fans, Tuivasa is looking to end a two-fight losing streak, while Volkov is hoping to keep his title hopes in the mix.
Previous opponents Ciryl Gane and Sergei Pavlovich both knocked out Tai Tuivasa. Tuivasa’s two-game losing run was followed by four consecutive knockout victories. Volkov demonstrated his continued dangerousness by knocking out Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Romonov in the first round.
Volkov is a patient striker who has been present towards the top of the league for some time. He towers over Tuivasa by a full head, and his 4.89 major strikes per minute with 57% accuracy are outstanding hitting metrics. The Russian has 24 victories coming by knockout in an average of 12 minutes and 54 seconds.
Tuivasa may be through a rough patch, but he is still the world’s sixth best heavyweight. His knockout power is off the charts; thirteen of his fourteen wins have come via stoppage. The Sydney native has been knocked out three times despite having battled for an average of 6 minutes and 41 seconds each fight.
Both of Tai Tuivasa’s previous homecoming fights ended in second round submission losses to Sergei Spivak and Junior Dos Santos, respectively. Despite his four-fight winning streak against easy opponents, we are lowering our expectations because of his recent losses against Ciryl Gane and Sergei Pavlovich.
Volkov is a highly proficient striker with a track record of success against elite competition. He is 6 feet 7 inches tall and has a reach of 80 inches. Volkov’s record is better than the majority of his competitors, and his few defeats have all come at the hands of the very best in his division. Volkov’s most recent two fights saw him knock out his opponents in the first round: Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Romanov.
