This Saturday, August 12, at The Apex in Las Vegas, the undercard of UFC Fight Night features a light heavyweight bout between Khalil Rountree and Chris Daukaus. With three wins in a row, Rountree is ready to take on former heavyweight Daukaus, who is looking to revive his career at a lower weight class.
After a 1-3 stretch dampened expectations, Khalil Rountree appears to have found his footing again. Rountree may not have deserved to win by split decision in his previous bout against Dustin Jacoby, but he is improving. Rountree has talent, but at age 33, time is not in his favor. While he’s still at the top of his game, he needs to make a change.
Rountree is a powerful striker who fights with evil intentions and is known for his savage kicks. He has knocked out his opponents seven times in eleven victories. Rountree is on the rise and ready to take the battle to the transplanted heavyweight Daukaus, who may have the upper hand physically.
Daukaus quickly rose from intriguing potential to middling heavyweight. Daukaus has lost three in a row via stoppage, making him look weak and vulnerable, therefore he’s dropping down to light heavyweight. It couldn’t have happened to a more formidable foe than Rountree, who is both powerful and nimble.
Daukaus’s quick hands and massive frame provide him an advantage if his chin stays strong. Rountree can go behind if he doesn’t immediately overpower his opponents with his 6.41 big blows per minute.
Daukaus was never a lights-out striker at heavyweight, but Rountree can take several hits before he lands his own. However, losing weight won’t fix his double chin. In order to convince Daukaus to drop his hands, he needs to put pressure on him early while avoiding the rest of the horde. Daukaus needs to keep his hands up, but he’ll have to dive under fire soon if he doesn’t want Rountree to knock the wind out of him.
