On Saturday, July 28 UFC 291 will take place at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. UFC 291 will feature former middleweight champion Jan Blachowicz making his light heavyweight debut against Alex Pereira, in what could be an intriguing matchup that could result in one earning a title shot.
Pereira stands out as an impressive fighter to make the transition to 205 pounds due to his unique background as a kickboxer, making his transition much faster without needing time for adjustment and adaptation to his new weight class.
Blachowicz, on the other hand, is a 40-year-old fighter who hasn’t experienced much success recently. While his grappling game remains competent, it no longer compares with what it used to be in his prime. After drawing against Magomed Ankalaev for the vacant title last November and coming away empty handed from that fight left him on the outside looking in for another chance at holding onto it once more.
Blachowicz and Pereira possess considerable power, making this matchup unpredictable at any moment. But it should make for a fun showdown as both fighters are capable of knocking someone out with just one punch.
Pereira should take advantage of his height and reach to control the center of the cage and avoid being taken down, while also dodging Blachowicz’s leg kicks that may come his way. Pereira will use his striking as the cornerstone to try and win this bout.
Pereira’s mentor and trainer is former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira, who defeated Jan Blachowicz a few years back. Pereira can use Teixeira as his guide to effectively utilize his wrestling abilities against Blachowicz’s takedown attempts and keep the fight standing as long as possible.
Pereira could then move forward into a title eliminator against Jiri Prochazka and one step closer towards Israel Adesanya’s fifth fight with him.
